I’ve recently been to Bangkok and Cambodia. It was the most fun and memorable trip I’ve ever had. I ate food that I never thought I would ever eat in my entire life. It’s been a great experience. Hopefully you too will get to taste all of the exotic foods I’ve tried.
My first bit of advice is to never miss out on street food. This is where all the excitement is. You’ll be served good food that won’t break your pocket. The foods sold on the streets are specifically made for the locals, meaning you really get to have a taste of all their locally made delicacy. It’s sure won’t be some tourist trap with inflated prices. The following are some of the bizarre foods I’ve tried:
Durian is a must try food. Most people say they can’t stand the smell. Durian is one of those things that you either love or hate. I grew up in Davao City, Philippines where Durian is abundant. Every year Durian festival is celebrated during a fruitful season. This king of fruit became my personal favorite and was surprise that after a long time of not coming home I was able to have a mouthful of it in Bangkok. In Singapore, durian is never missed as its their national fruit and you can find it anywhere. You’re going to want to give this a try. Even if you end up not liking it.
Scorpion is something all you adventure seekers should give a try. It’s a crunchy treat that you won’t forget. Served on a stick, looks horrible but it taste good just like a crab meat.
Then there are the insects. How can you go to either of these countries and not try the insects? At first you may be a little squeamish. For a lot of you this might be a once in a lifetime experience. I know it was for me. That’s why I tried them all. I was actually surprised by how good the tarantula was. It reminded me a bit like seafood.
But one of the most interesting things I ate during my whole trip are grasshoppers. You never forget your first one. Oddly enough, they kind of taste like green plants. It must be from what they eat. Lastly, I tried also tried cockroaches. I’m not going to deny it. I didn’t like them at all. You probably won’t either. But, I suggest that you give them a try.
I must apologize to my mother for the last thing I tried. I know she wouldn’t approve of me eating a happy pizza. It’s topped with dried marijuana powder and leaves. I’m not a smoker. Don’t worry, Mom. But, I took a bite out of curiosity. It’s not something that I’ll be doing again. Let’s just say that it was one of the unique experience I sure will still cherish.
I highly suggest that you visit Bangkok and Cambodia if you ever get the chance. I’d do it all over in a heart beat. I’d even eat the cockroaches again. You only live once. You might as well experience everything this world has to offer. I traveled to these countries one bite at a time which is how I suggest you do. It doesn’t matter how slow of a traveler are you. You travel not to please others but yourself so embrace it, make time for it, and savor it. It’s yours. Just like how I feel that it’s mine.
